Serchhip is one of the important towns in Mizoram. It also serves as the headquarter of Serchhip district and Serchhip Sadar subdivision. It is located in the central part of Mizoram about 112 km from Aizawl. The name of the place originated from citrus trees that were found on hill top of the then Serchhip village. The meaning of the word Serchhip is 'citrus-on-top'.
History of SerchhipSerchhip’s first settlement dates back to the time of Lallula, a Mizo chief, who formed a settlement at Kawlri. Thlânrâwn Pawi was massacred by Lallula at Zopui. After this incident, Lallula afraid of revenge from Thlanrawn, fled to Artahkawn and Lunglei Zobawk. He from there migrated towards North, and reached Serchhip Kawlri. Bengkhuaia, a great Mizo chief founded the second settlement of Serchhip. He raided the Assam valley from Kawlri in 1871. He captured the daughter of James Winchester, Mary Winchester and this incident led to the First Lushai Expedition in the year 1872.
